According to the Professional Contractors Group (PCG)- an organisation that represents the UK's freelancers - many of its members travel long distances to supply their services to clients.
PCG's managing director, John Brazier, went on to explain that the rising cost of petrol is making it less and less cost effective for them to go the extra mile for their clients.
He said the punitive tax regime around Allowed Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAP) does not help things - this is just another stealth tax.
As a result, the PCG has added its voice to the campaign already being waged by nurses, farmers, fishermen and hauliers against rising fuel costs.
PCG has also stated its opposition to the principle of offering different AMAP rates for different vehicles, depending on how environmentally friendly they supposedly are.
The organisation is now writing to the Chancellor of the Exchequer to highlight the dangers posed to labour market flexibility by the current fuel situation, and also to the Royal College of Nurses to express solidarity with its campaign to have NHS mileage rates increased for nurses who use their own cars.
