Report on jobs offers good news for interims

16 October 2009

A new report reveals good news for interim manages with figures suggesting a slight increase in both permanent and temporary staff employment during September.

The Report on Jobs published by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG revealed that permanent staff placements and temporary/contract staff billings rose for the second successive month in September, and at slightly sharper rates than one month previously.

However, growth remained subdued compared with the buoyant levels seen prior to the recent downturn.

The drop in overall job vacancies was the weakest in the current sixteen-month period of decline and whilst demand for permanent staff fell only modestly, demand for temporary/contract staff rose slightly for the first time in fifteen months.

Kevin Green, the REC's Chief Executive said the report represented more good news on the jobs market, but warned the labour market is still very fragile and there was concern that recovery from this recession might be jobs light.

He went on to suggest that one of the reasons for this is that employers have retained more staff during this recession than previously and many companies will be able to respond to increases in demand without hiring new employees.

The Government must not stifle any employment growth by introducing additional employment legislation, Green added
