REC urges public sector reform

05 March 2010

Short-term cuts in public expenditure could cause irreparable damage to the delivery of frontline services, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

Instead, the organisation that represents agencies that find work for interim managers believes the public sector needs to look at reform and new models of delivery.

REC Chief Executive Kevin Green said that flexible resourcing must be seen as part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

He was speaking following the launch of the REC's public sector resourcing campaign, Make It Work! The campaign will promote alternative methods of delivering public sector services by making the most of flexible resourcing and acquiring new talent to lead transformation.

The campaign will focus on convincing the major political parties and public sector organisations that reform, rather than random cuts, is needed in response to the public sector expenditure crisis.

Among the proposals being put forward by the REC is the centralising of back office functions such as payroll and the collection of council tax.

It also says recruitment agencies and the use of temporary, contract and interim staff can also give public sector organisation the flexibility to respond to demand and be as agile as the private sector.
