Christmas Day working of IT professionals

02 December 2009

Many interim managers who work in the IT sector could be giving up their Christmas dinner for a day at work, according to a recent report.

The survey by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk found that more than half the nation's IT workers expect to be on duty on Christmas Day.

In fact 53% of IT professionals felt they were even more likely to be called on than members of the emergency services.

However, they were closely followed in the Christmas working stakes by Journalists, 48%, freight drivers, 46% and petrol station attendants, 41%. Restaurant staff also ranked highly, with 38% saying they were likely to be working on Christmas Day.

The study also reported a quarter of all employees working over Christmas would be doing so for the same wage as normal, and 42% of IT workers said that they were given no option over working throughout the festive season.

The IT profession was found to work the least sociable hours of all Britons, as four in five staff said they work past 7pm at least three times a week.

Mark Pearson, the founder of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, is reported as saying that the majority of companies couldn't operate without the maintenance provided by in-house, agency and interim IT workers.

The sad fact is that many companies will also need them on standby throughout the festive period to ensure that all runs smoothly, he added.
