A local authority is seeking an Interim Head of Legal, Licensing and Registrars Service for the duration of 3 to 6 months.


The main responsibilities will be:



  • Assist in the implementation of the review of Legal Services and the recruitment of a new Head of Legal, Licensing and Registrars Service.

  • Follow-up opportunities for joint legal service provision with other local authorities

  • Undertake the day to day management of the legal services teams (litigation lawyers, and legal executives undertaking council’s debt collection and re-possession work)

Ideally the candidate needs to have ideas about the delivery of legal and other services and have a local government background in legal services at a Head of Service level in a large authority, London Borough, Unitary or team leader in a Metropolitan authority. The focus of the role will be the review rather than team building which will be the role of the permanent post-holder when recruited. Part-time working can be considered for this role

Monitoring Officer duties, principal legal advisor to council duties and management of the committee services function are undertaken by other officers and will not be part of this role.
