Tips and Advice for Interims

Is Interim Management for You?

Interim Management is not for everyone. In this post we explore the upsides and the downsides to help you decide.

So what does makes a successful Interim Manager?

You will have a senior management background in industry, commerce or the public sector. You will have experience in a number of companies and/or sectors. You like variety and success becasue no assignment is ever the same.

You will be results oriented with many examples of on time delivery throughout your career.  You are confident in your own abilities and can persuade people that you can meet their needs and add value.

You enjoy making an impact in a short space of time. You are comfortable with the stress of going into new environments, with summing up situations quickly, with making new relationships and influencing those around you to play their part in delivering the task in hand.

You are relatively secure financially and can absorb periods of ‘rest’ between assignments. You have integrity and always honour your commitments. You never let people down.

Interim Management – The Upsides

You get variety, flexibility and a degree of control over your lifestyle. Your skills and experience are rapidly enhanced and you will develop a confidence that you can tackle virtually anything.

Whilst you have to be an expert in understanding how to influence in organisations, your career is no longer dependent upon the politics.

Given regular assignments, it can be reasonably rewarding financially.

Interim Management – The Downsides

It can be stressful. Where is the next assignment? Marketing oneself and doing the work often in conflict. Chasing assignments that never materialise. Coming second to another candidate. Constant change. Meeting new people. Needing to hit the ground running. Under pressure to deliver.

You may have to work away from home for long periods.

Finally you will need to provide pension, insurance etc without the corporate ‘umbrella’.
